Aiko is an incredibly energetic and affectionate 3-year-old collie mix who is looking for an active home with lots of outdoor time and couch cuddles. She LOVES fetch and getting attention from anyone who will give it to her.
Aiko plays well with other dogs, but mostly enjoys running with them and hasn't quite figured out how to wrestle play with them yet. She does well with cats that will set boundaries. However, if a cat runs, she will chase but only to play. She shows zero aggression towards them. Aiko craves attention and will ask for it by tucking her head under your hand or dropping a ball in your lap. She needs a home that has LOTS of attention to give and/or a job for her to do.
According to her original owner, Aiko would do best in a home with older children and adults because she tries to herd younger/smaller ones. She hasn't shown this behavior at her foster home yet, but it is common with the border collie and cattle dog breeds (we believe she has both).
Aiko's ideal home has lots of outdoor space to run or at the very least a nice size back yard to play fetch in. She would be a great adventure companion as she does well in the car, listens fairly well off leash, and loves to explore.
She would be an awesome dog for someone wanting to do agility training. She's very smart and driven and loves to please.
If you're interested in meeting Aiko, please fill out an application to set-up a meet and greet. She will be available for meet and greets/adoptions starting September 23, 2019.
Hailey D is her foster parent. The adoption fee for Aiko is $275, please complete our online application formspeak to a volunteer if you are interested in adopting Aiko. A volunteer will contact you.
All Kalamazoo Animal Rescue dogs & puppies are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Dogs have been heartworm tested and if appropriate (age and time of year) all dogs and puppies are given heartworm preventative. All are given medication to rid them of roundworms and checked and treated for fleas & ear mites, if needed. Dogs and puppies are given distemper vaccines and depending on how long the pet has been in foster care, additional distemper vaccine(s) may be necessary and the expense will be incurred by the adopter. Any canine over 4 months of age is brought current on the Rabies vaccine. Additional vet care may have been provided depending on the particular animal's needs. Dogs are individually priced as above.
It is in the best interest of pooch and owner to enroll in an obedience class soon after adoption. After all, you have a lot to learn about your new friend. Both PetSmart and the Kalamazoo Dog Training Club offer a discount to owners with newly adopted dogs. Enroll before any behavior problems start - you won't regret it!
