Grace is a very smart, happy, and loving girl who is looking for an active family she can call her own! She is a 21 month old Border collie/ miniature Australian shepherd. She is a little girl at only 35 lbs but she is full of energy and personality! She needs an active family who is willing to provide daily exercise and mental stimulation for her. She loves walks and runs. She is an awesome running partner! She loves to play frisbee and fetch and will play forever! She would also make an incredible agility dog! This girl has unlimited potential!
But Grace does need some help to reach her potential so she needs a family that is willing to put some time and effort into training her. She knows some basic commands but further training is a must! She really wants to please and is food motivated so she is very trainable for anyone willing to put in the effort. She is extremely loyal and comes running every time her foster mom calls. There are also no worries about her running off - she has no desire to leave her people. But a fenced yard or invisible fence would help keep her safe as she really enjoys time outside. She would not be well suited for apartment living. Before coming to her foster family she had not had many opportunities to go places so new people and places make her a little nervous at first but she comes around quickly. You just have to go a bit slow for her! She is very excited to find out what is in this big fun world! Grace loves to jump and that is a behavior her foster family is working to correct and they have seen a big improvement in a very short time. Grace seems to respond very well to consistent rules. Consistency is very important as she is smart and will try to see how much she can get away with! Grace has also had some accidents in the house so some ongoing house training will be required. But her foster famly is hoping to have her well on her way by the time she is ready to go to her new home. She is crate trained and she is used to sleeping in her crate. Her foster family believes that the time when she can be trusted out of her crate unsupervised is not far off but right now it would be best to keep her crated until she learns the rules and is better trained.
Grace is a very lovey girl who just wants to be with her people. She is a dog who will follow you everywhere you go. She wants to be in the middle of every activity. She would love to lay next to you on the couch or better yet, right in your lap! She has lived with young children and cats as well as other dogs. Her foster family has found that she loves to run around the yard and play with their two (much bigger) dogs but she can be a bit bossy and dominate when it comes to toys, chews and affection. Therefore a home with another dominate dog would probably not work out. Grace is definitely no couch potato but if she gets her exercise and playtime she is more than happy to sit quietly and snuggle or just lay close to you! With a little time, effort and patience Grace will be a wonderful and fun lifelong companion!
Grace will be ready to go to her new home around November 2nd. At that time she will be spayed, microchipped, and up to date on shots.
Laura D is her foster parent. The adoption fee for Grace is $300, please complete our online application formspeak to a volunteer if you are interested in adopting Grace. A volunteer will contact you.
All Kalamazoo Animal Rescue dogs & puppies are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Dogs have been heartworm tested and if appropriate (age and time of year) all dogs and puppies are given heartworm preventative. All are given medication to rid them of roundworms and checked and treated for fleas & ear mites, if needed. Dogs and puppies are given distemper vaccines and depending on how long the pet has been in foster care, additional distemper vaccine(s) may be necessary and the expense will be incurred by the adopter. Any canine over 4 months of age is brought current on the Rabies vaccine. Additional vet care may have been provided depending on the particular animal's needs. Dogs are individually priced as above.
It is in the best interest of pooch and owner to enroll in an obedience class soon after adoption. After all, you have a lot to learn about your new friend. Both PetSmart and the Kalamazoo Dog Training Club offer a discount to owners with newly adopted dogs. Enroll before any behavior problems start - you won't regret it!
