Webster was scheduled to be euthanized the day I stopped into Animal Services, due to the fact that he was heartworm positive. He had a terrible cough and respiratory infection as well. I took one look at the little guy and felt I just couldn't leave him there to be put to sleep. I have always been a sucker for Beagles. Little did I know when I brought Webster home how sick he really was.
I took Webster into the Vet the next day and a plan of action was put into place of how best to treat him. Webster was determined to be about 6 to 7 years old, never neutered and had probably been out wandering for quite some time.
His first heartworm treatment took place without much difficulty but the trouble started about 3 weeks later. Webster had what the Vet called “a crash” of his system. He became extremely ill at home and was rushed into the Vet office and then hospitalized. It was determined that not only was Webster suffering from heartworm infestation but had also contracted Babesia. Webster underwent blood transfusions and months of medication and therapy to get him back on his feet. He was unable to complete his heartworm treatments as the process was too risky to combine with the Babesia treatment.
During the course of all this, an amazing family had spotted Webster on our website and wanted to meet him. The entire family came to see him, fell in love with him and asked to be able to adopt him. It ended up taking nine months and $2,000 in vet bills to get Webster healthy enough to go to his new home. His family recently contacted me and said things are going GREAT with Webster and his recent heartworm test found him to be negative.
In my mind I will always think of Webster as the “Wonder dog”. His will to live amazed me. He had many critical moments but he kept on fighting. Today, I am proud to say that this handsome guy is living the life he probably always dreamed of.
