We will be closed on Friday, July 4th for the holiday. Keep reading for tips on pet safety and what to do if you find a lost pet.
Check out these resources for pet safety over the long weekend:
If you find a lost pet:
- If the animal is friendly, contain them in a safe area. Keep unfamiliar animals away from other pets or children while you try to locate an owner; even pets that are normally good with other animals/kids can react differently in new situations.
- Check for a collar with identification. If a dog has a Kalamazoo County rabies tag, you may contact KCASE during their open hours to look up the owner’s information. As soon as you’re able, you can bring the lost pet to a local vet clinic to check for a microchip. We recommend calling ahead to check if they can accommodate this service, but most clinics are happy to help.
- Try posting the pet on neighborhood groups on social media like Facebook or Nextdoor.
- Post a Found Animal alert on the KCASE website Report Found Pets page and Pawboost.
- If the animal needs immediate help, call the Kalamazoo County non-emergency dispatch line at (269) 488-8911.
- If you choose to foster the animal while attempting to locate their owner, please note there is a 30-day private stray hold for found animals in Kalamazoo County. A found pet cannot be permanently altered (for example, spayed or neutered) until this time has elapsed. If admitted to KCASE, the stray hold is 7 days before the pet can be altered and become eligible for transfer to another organization or put up for adoption.
Never drop off an animal at a shelter or rescue when they are closed or without approval from their staff. This poses a safety hazard for the pet and is illegal.
